What Do I Really Want?

What do you really want?

People often say that the thing that stops them moving forward is knowing what they really want in life. If you’re at a point in your life where you know what you’ve got isn’t what you want, but you don’t know what you do want – here’s a range of ways to work it out.
Before you start – make sure you won’t be interrupted for half an hour, be open and curious to the thoughts that come to mind – write them down and notice what seems right for you.

 1. Opposite Thinking. Write down what’s going on now – then flip to the opposite. For example, if you’re unhappy in a relationship – the opposite is you want to be happy in a relationship or happy being single. When you’ve got the opposite that’s right for you, ask yourself...
If you had this right now – what would you be doing and saying differently?
What kind of person would you be in this situation?
What greater things would you be connected to?
What would other people notice about you?
What impact could this have on the rest of your life?

2. List it – List the different areas of your life and write down under each heading what’s going well now or gone well in the past, what do you enjoy and what inspires you? Try to get 10 different things under each heading.
Now look at your lists from the perspective of your best friend or someone you admire – what do you notice from this perspective about the lists?
Now back to being you – what have you learnt about the things that inspire you? How can you use this to change direction?

3. Time Travel – Create some space and mark out your past, present and future on the floor. Start at the beginning of you, walk through your history to the present and notice all the good things that you achieved. Gather them up and write them down.
Travel through time to ten years from now. What are the great things that you’ve achieved now – the worlds your oyster – anything goes – what are you really proud of at this point? What difference has it made to your life? What do you see in your life, what do you say to yourself and how does it feel?
When you look back over the ten years – what were the steps you took to get you to this point? Who were the people who helped you along the way? What or who inspired you?

4. Magazine Mangle – Get a heap of magazines, newspapers, articles, or clips from the internet – go through and cut out the articles and pictures that inspire and motivate you – pictures of people you admire.
Write down what it is about them that you admire. How does this relate to your life – either in the past, present or future? If you could design your life in any way you want – what would you be doing? How would you be using your skills, knowledge and experience? What other skills would you like to gain?
